Official: Legon Cities sign Victorien Adebayor on loan from HB Køge

Ghana Premier League moneybags, Legon Cities have struck a loan agreement with Danish side HB Køge for the services of Niger international Victorien Adebayor.

The forward, 24, had joined the Danish club on a three-year deal from Inter Allies in October last year.

But Adebayor has not been able to replicate the scintillating form that earned him the switch from the Ghana Premier League.

Several issues including complaints of being homesick and not having his girlfriend around have forced Koge to meet Adebayor’s wishes by making him available for clubs in Africa – hence the emergence of bidding tussle between Hearts of Oak and Legon Cities which the latter has now won.

Neither club was able to meet Koge’s 100,000 euros valuation for an outright transfer but the Royals have managed to secure a loan agreement to have Adebayor until the end of 2021.

“In this way, we meet the wishes of Adebayor. For personal reasons, he has a strong need to be close to his family for the time to come. We have listened to that.

“We have come to the conclusion that if he does not thrive here because he does not have “himself with”, it is the right solution,” HB Køge’s director Per Rud explained.

He continued: “Adebayor’s first time in Denmark has not been easy. There has been corona. The paperwork with visas and work permits has been a long time coming. We have not yet succeeded in bringing his girlfriend to Denmark.

“At the same time, he has been hit by injuries, which has meant that he has not been given the desired playing time.

“Now he gets a period in a club where he is safe. At the same time, he can get in shape and, in addition to football, focus on family life.”

“We have now put together a plan together with Legon Cities FC. It must ensure the framework for Adebayor’s development. He is an exciting player and we still believe in the model with players from Africa and that we can integrate them.

‘King’ Adebayor at Allies

Before switching to HB Køge, Victorien Adebayor was the main man for Inter Allies. He was the top scorer in two truncated Ghana Premier League seasons.

The ‘Eleven Is To One’ side scooped many suitors to sign the 2017 Wafu Cup of Nations revelation for a reported $100,000 fee from AS GNN.

Adebayor took the Ghanaian topflight by storm but was not lucky to complete a full season throughout his stay due to the challenges which befell the country’s football.

In his debut season – the 2017/18 campaign, Adebayor scored 7 goals in 12 games to lead the scorers’ chart before the season got truncated after the Anas corruption scandal hit top officials of Ghana football.

Adebayor, again, led the race for the golden boot with 12 goals and 5 assists in 13 appearances in the 2019/20 Ghana Premier League but COVID-19 outbreak hit the country in March, forcing another season to be cancelled.
