Hearts 6-1 Bechem: Phobians dismantle 10-man Hunters

Hearts of Oak rained in the goals in their first game of the new year, destroying leaders Bechem United with a stunning 6-1 victory at the Accra Sports Stadium Saturday.

The 2020/21 Ghana Premier League match-day 7 fixture produced no goal in the opening half with the major highlight being the marching orders given Bechem United defender Emmanuel Asante in the 39th minute.

The experienced left-back received a straight red card for dissent after issuing some choice words to the referee who handed him a yellow card for delaying in effecting a throw-in in the 38th minute.

In the second half, the numerical disadvantage came haunting the Hunters who had hoped to maintain their unbeaten run.

Manaf Umar, who will go on to win the man-of-the-match award, set the tone with the opening goal in the 53rd minute.

Striker Victor Aidoo then scored back-to-back goals in the 68th and 73rd minutes to hand the hosts a 3-0 lead.

Hearts were then awarded a penalty which got converted by substitute Frederick Ansah Botchway in 7 minutes from time.

Bechem’s teenage striker Prince Kwabena Adu, who had come on for Steven Owusu, temporarily reduced the deficit to 4-1 in the 86th minute.

But the rampant Phobians continued their riot with Mamane Lawali and Benjamin Afutu each taking turns to add their names to the scoresheet in the 88th and 3rd minute of additional time respectively.

Hearts of Oak eventually claimed their third victory of the 2020/21 campaign with a 6-1 win – the biggest results so far which sees them move within three points of Bechem who occupy top spot on the league table with 14.
