I still merit a place in the Black Stars – Afriyie Acquah

Turkey-based midfielder Afriyie Acquah insists he still merits a place in the Black Stars.

The 28-year-old, who currently plays for Yeni Malatyaspor, has been absent from the national team for some time now. His last involvement with the Ghana senior national team was at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

“I’m doing very well with my club so of course I still merit a call-up.

“I have not warmed the bench since joining the Turkish club. I have been consistent with my club every week.

“Even Cristiano Ronaldo and Leonardo Bonucci are still playing for the national team. I am not an old man, I still have age on my side.

“Why will somebody say I’m too old to play for the Black Stars and I’m still active?,” Acquah said in an interview with Max FM.

Regarding a possible return to the Black Stars, Acquah says he is ready to serve the national team when called upon.

He has however debunked claims of being worried over his snub.

“You can’t compare the national team to a club side. A coach must, however, maintain a consistent squad because it helps team bonding.

“I’m not worried about my absence but I’m always ready to serve the Black Stars.

“Coaches have their plans and I could be part or not so I’m not really worried if I’m not called up,” the former Torino man added.

Afriyie Acquah has been instrumental for Yeni Malatyaspor so far in the 2020/21 Turkish Super Lig.
