Frank Acheampong misses penalty in heavy Tianjin defeat

Ghana winger Frank Acheampong missed a penalty for Tianjin Teda as they slumped to a 4-1 defeat to Shanghai SIPG in the Chinese Super League Monday night.

Shanghai SIPG – who were extending their unbeaten record to eight matches – broke the deadlock in the 29th minute when Tianjin failed to clear a corner and Uzbek midfielder Odil Akhmedov lashed a shot into the net from outside the box to make it 1-0.

Brazil forward Hulk increased Shanghai’s lead in first-half stoppage time. He received a one-touch pass from Akhmedov and scored, but his goal was ruled out for marginal offside. After a VAR ruling, however, the referee awarded the goal to SIPG.

Tianjin had a good chance to pull one back via a penalty in first-half injury time, but skipper Acheampong failed to convert the spot-kick.

SIPG scored twice in the second half, with a header from Austria striker Marko Arnautovic in the 71st and a penalty from Brazil playmaker Oscar in the 81st, before full-back Zhao Honglue pulled one back for Tianjin in injury time.

The defeat means Tianjin Teda remain bottom of the Chinese Super League Group B table with just a point after 8 matches.
