Serie B play-offs: Gyasi fires blanks as Chievo gain advantage over Spezia

Emmanuel Gyasi played full time as Spezia Calcio succumbed to a 2-0 defeat to Chievo Verona in the first leg of their Serie B promotion play-off semifinals tie Saturday.

The 26-year-old Ghanaian-Italian forward, who has been instrumental in Spezia‘s impressive 2019/20 campaign, was in action in the Serie B promotion play-offs at the Stadio Bentegodi.

Chievo Verona did not delay in their quest for early goals as Filip Djordjevic drew first blood with just 2 minutes played.

Nigerian international, Joel Obi provided an assist for Jacopo Segre to slot home Chievo Verona’s second in the 9th minute.

Spezia could not match Chievo Verona’s tactical discipline who held on to the 2-0 lead into the break.

Back from the break, Chievo managed to hold on to their lead with Spezia fruitlessly pushing for goals.

Spezia had a chance to pull a goal back after Gyasi was brought down just before the hour mark. But a Matteo Ricci effort from the spot got saved by Chievo goalkeeper Adrian Semper.

Chievo Verona will run away with a 2-0 opening leg win. Spezia host the reverse fixture on Tuesday, August 11.

The aggregate winner faces either Frosinone or Pordenone in the battle for the last spot to the 2020/21 Italian Serie A season.
