Swansea’s play-offs hopes suffer blow despite Andre Ayew goal

Andre Ayew scored his 15th league goal on Wednesday but it was not enough as Swansea City saw their play-off hopes dealt a crushing blow after a 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest at City Ground.

The Swans twice led through Rhian Brewster and the Black Stars captain but Sammy Ameobi cancelled out each of those efforts.

Brewster, the Liverpool loanee, scored the opening goal for Swansea in the 8th minute.

Sammy Ameobi soon levelled against the run of play.

Steve Cooper’s side had the advantage at half-time as Ayew was adjudged to have been brought down by Ryan Yates, and referee Oliver Langford had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot.

The Ghana international stepped up to take it himself, and he sent Brice Samba the wrong way to register his 17th goal of the campaign and, crucially, give Swansea a 2-1 lead.

But Ameobi struck from long range 10 minutes into the second half.

The game ended all-square with a point of more use to the hosts than the visitors who finished the game with 10 men after Kyle Naughton got sent off in the closing stages.

The result leaves the Swans three points off the Championship play-off places, with just two games – against Bristol City and Reading – remaining.
