‘Clubs, NOT GFA, must be blamed for cases of unqualified player use’

The General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Prosper Harrison Addo says the federation cannot take any share of the blame for cases of unqualified player use that have raised their ugly heads in the 2019/20 season.

Just before the 2019/20 Ghana Premier League went on hold, Medeama SC lost six points for fielding an unqualified player – Nana Kofi Babil in their match-day 12 league fixture against Great Olympics. The GFA Disciplinary Committee found Medeama in breach of Premier League regulations; Articles 28(1)(e), 28(2) and 33(1)(e) after a protest from Olympics and thus awarded them 3 points.

Several clubs including Hearts of Oak and Elmina Sharks have also been rumoured to have breached the regulations and may lose points but most clubs, administrators and sections of the media have blamed the Football Association for the mishap.

Prosper Harrison Addo opposes that notion, saying clubs must take sole responsibility for their actions.

“We [GFA] have the rules and regulations there but some clubs do not take their time to read well. We have a platform to know players that are cautioned. The FA also writes letters informing clubs on the players that are cautioned per match.

“There is a system that indicates suspended players so if a club insists on using those players then the fault is on the clubs,” the GFA General Secretary stated on Joy Sports Track Saturday.

Prosper Harrison Addo minced no words saying all offenders in breach of any regulations will be sanctioned accordingly.

The Ghana Premier League, which is in its 15th round, has been suspended indefinitely until government lifts the COVID-19 pandemic-induced ban on all social gatherings and intercity travels.
