Baba Yara Stadium closed down, Kotoko and Faisal to look for new home

After several months of delay, the Baba Yara Sports Stadium has been finally closed for renovation works.

The decision to give the Kumasi stadium a complete facelift has been on the cards of the Sports Ministry since 2018 but the project was delayed by procurement processes, Footy-Ghana.com understands.

And on Monday, the National Sports Authority (NSA) announced the immediate closure of the facility for renovation works ahead of the 63rd national Independence Day celebrations on March 6.

A statement signed by Acting Director of the Ashanti Regional office of the NSA, Edmond Appiah said that there were important areas that were to be fixed without interruptions in the coming days so all sporting activities needed to be halted.

As a result, users of the stadium like Asante Kotoko and King Faisal, who use the facility as home grounds in the Ghana Premier League, would have to find other facilities to adopt.

The statement also added that that the full renovation will resume after the celebrations with sources telling Footy-Ghana.com that the major facelift for the Baba Yara Sports Stadium could be completed in October or latest by the end of year.

The renovation works are expected to include a complete change of the playing field which has remained same since it was laid prior to the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, depleted tartan track, scoreboard, floodlights, and replacement of the many broken seats and fixing of the poor washrooms
