Awako fights ‘old player’ tag

Great Olympics star, Gladson Awako has insisted he is not an old player after staging a return to the Ghana Premier League.

The top midfielder joined Olympics prior to the start of the 2019/20 season, almost eight years since leaving Berekum Chelsea for a five-year stint with DR Congo giants TP Mazembe. Awako went on to play for USL side Phoenix Rising for a season before becoming a free agent last year.

The 29-year-old has been key in the Olympics squad who have now bagged 4 points from two straight games after recording zero in their first three of the season.

Awako recorded his first goal for the season in Olympics’ 2-0 win over Karela United.

But the 2009 Fifa Under-20 World Cup winner is faced with the tag of passing his best.

“I am not past it neither am I too young to play the game. I started playing in Ghana years ago and so, people feel I am far too old for this,” Awako told reporters.

“However, most of my peers are still playing football outside Ghana and some are in the Black Stars team. Why are they not being asked to quit playing football?

Gladson Awako is eager to prove skeptics wrong.

“People need to stop saying I am old or I am a veteran. I have the chance now and I will prove myself,” he vowed.
