“No foreign coach was considered for Black Stars job”

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) never considered replacing former Black Stars coach Kwasi Appiah with a foreigner, an official of the body insists.

Charles Kwablan Akonnor, was announced the new coach of the national team on Wednesday., January 15

According to Executive Council member Frederick Acheampong, a Ghanaian gaffer was always the first choice for the GFA despite several media reports that the new administration preferred an expatriate to handle the team.

“We tried to go in for quality and someone who buys into the mentality of where we want to go with the Black Stars.

“It was a unanimous decision to go in for a local coach, there was no mention of a foreign coach even though we saw some speculations on social media.

“From the onset, our minds have been a local coach because we believe they can do it” Acheampong explained in a chat with Citi TV.

Explaining the FA’s decision to relieve Kwasi Appiah off the role, the top football administrator said they needed new brains.

“He led three major tournaments and is one of the coaches to have had the time to do whatever possible with the Black Stars so we thought it was time to give the opportunity to another Ghanaian to see what he can do.”

CK Akonnor is expected to be at the helm of affairs on an initial two-year contract.
