2019/20 GPL: ‘Kotoko accept provisional Baba Yara ban’

Asante Kotoko say they have accepted the Ghana Football Association’s decision to temporarily ban them from using the Baba Yara Sports Stadium as home grounds in the ongoing 2019/20 season.

The sanction comes on the back of fan agitation during and after last Sunday’s home defeat in the Ghana Premier League to Berekum Chelsea. A Kotoko fan got shot by a Police officer in the process.

The country’s football governing body had earlier in a release condemned the gory scenes after the match which saw peeved supporters of the Reds, chasing the Police vehicle that provided safety for match referee Charles Bulu.

Kotoko’s Public Relations Officer, Kennedy Boakye Ansah in an interview with  Accra-based Starr FM confirmed the club’s position on the verdict of the GFA.

“We accept the FA’s decision. As a club, we do not support fan hooliganism.”

A statement announcing the ban said: “Article 14 (2) of the GFA Premier League Regulations states that: ‘the GFA may order the closure of any league centre/venue where the safety of clubs, match officials and/or spectators cannot be guaranteed”.

“The GFA Prosecutor shall prefer charges against any person/party found to have breached any provision of the GFA Regulations or Disciplinary Code,” it added.

Kotoko’s next league fixture will see them playing as guests to Medeama at Tarkwa Wednesday.
