Afcon 2021Q: Black Stars really impressed me – Appiah

Ghana coach, Kwasi Appiah was really delighted with his charges’ performance after a positive start to their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifying campaign.

The Black Stars beat South Africa’s Bafana Bafana 2-0 courtesy goals from Thomas Partey and Kudus Mohammed in either half of the Group C encounter at Cape Coast Sports Stadium Thursday night.

Appiah’s lads played to the admiration of the over 15,000 natives who patronized the first match of the senior national team since the 2019 Afcon.

“The boys actually impressed me,” the Black Stars trainer told reporters.

“There were a lot of injuries in the call-ups – to about 4 or 5 players but we managed to replace them. That’s why we try to have a wide pool of young players to choose from so that they can always get into the team and be available for us at any time that we want. The national team must not be for a few players.

“Looking at the game, I think the boys played above themselves and that’s actually what we told them to do,” Kwasi Appiah added.

Ghana will travel to play São Tomé and Principe in their second Group C qualifier scheduled for Monday, November 18.
