Kotoko finally FIRE Zachariassen

Asante Kotoko have terminated the employment of head coach Kjetil Zachariassen with immediate effect.

The Ghanaian giants officially communicated the decision to the Norwegian Tuesday citing ‘failure to meet his performance targets.’

The decision comes barely 24 hours after a failed protracted compensation talks with the coach.

An instructive letter signed by club CEO George Amoakoh and addressed to the coach read in part:

“This is a final decision and is not subject to review.”

“If you will recall, Clause 7 of your Employment Contract set performance targets for you which included but not limited to the Club reaching at least the group stages of the Champions League and Confederation Cup Competitions, which were set out particularly in sub-clause 7.1.4.1 and 7.1.5 respectively.

“Therefore pursuant to Clause 12, specifically sub-clauses 12.4 and 12.4.1 which states that “The Club may terminate the Head Coach’s employment without compensation and without prior notice where the Head Coach is: Unable to meet any of the targets stated in Clause 7 herein.” We are by this Clause terminating your appointment effective the aforementioned date.

“You will be paid your outstanding salary for the month of October 2019.”

The former AshantiGold gaffer, who was on a net salary of $3,000, supervised Asante Kotoko’s 2019/20 Caf Champions League campaign where they got denied a group stage berth by Tunisian side Etoile du Sahel. Another opportunity in the Confederation Cup was missed by the failure to overcome FC San Pedro of Cote d’Ivoire. Events after the latter saw the club’s management tell the coach back in Abidjan his safety couldn’t be guaranteed in Kumasi. Efforts to see him quietly leave the club proved futile until this decision.

Kjetil Zachariassen joined Asante Kotoko in July 2019, coming in as a replacement for local man CK Akonnor.
