André Ayew registered his first league goal as Swansea City returned to the top of the English Championship Wednesday night.
The Ghana captain scored the match-winner in a 2-1 comeback victory away to Charlton Athletic – not only was it the forward’s first-ever goal in the English second tier, it was also his first league goal for the side since May 2016.
Charlton took an early lead – on 2 minutes – through Jonathan Leko but Swansea responded strongly and got back on level terms courtesy a Yan Dhanda effort in the 17th.
André Ayew – who had seen a goal ruled out earlier – netted what proved the winner midway through the second half, turning in a Matt Grimes corner kick which had been flicked on by Joe Rodon.
The victory – Swansea’s first at The Valley since 1980 – was enough to see Steve Cooper’s side overtake Leeds United at the summit of the English Championship with 21 points. They lead with just a point after 10 games.
André Ayew has now scored three goals in 8 appearances for Swansea this season.
