10-man AshantiGold crash out of Caf Confederation Cup

Ghana’s AshantiGold were dumped out of the 2019/20 Caf Confederation Cup 4-3 on aggregate by Moroccan side RS Berkane Saturday night.

The Orange club won 2-0 at Stade Municipal de Berkane.

The result ensured last season’s finalists overturn a 3-2 deficit from the first leg at Obuasi a fortnight ago.

Issoufou Dayo and Zaid Krouch made themselves heroes for Berkane with first-half goals.

Dayo, the Burkina Faso centre-back netted the opener to level the tie from close range in the 32nd minute before Moroccan forward curled home number 2 on 45 minutes.

AshantiGold were forced to labour with 10 men for greater parts of the game.

Musah Mohammed was harshly sent off as early as the 8th minute. Rwandan referee Abdul Karim Twagirumukiza bizarrely issued a straight red card to the centre-back after a ‘harmless’ tackle in midfield.

The latest capitulation against RS Berkane means AshantiGold have now lost their last four qualifying ties against North African opponents in any Caf inter-club competition – 2007, 2008, 2011 and 2019.

RS Berkane now progress to the final qualifying round to the group stage.
