Caf CC: RS Berkane in maiden final, Zamalek aim first title

The 2018/19 Caf Confederation Cup final is now set for an epic encounter after RS Berkane of Algeria and Egyptian giant Zamalek claimed the two spots Sunday.

Africa’s second club competition was dominated by four North African sides all looking to secure a place in the final with CS Sfaxien visiting Berkane in high spirits after their 2-0 first leg victory in Sfax. The four-time African champions were stunned with three first half goals from Kodjo Fo-doh Laba, Omar Nemssaoui and Issifou Dayo, ensuring the home side sealed their ticket to the final with a 3-2 aggregate result.

RS Berkane’s first final on the African stage will be against a notable opponent in Zamalek. The five-time African champions qualified after holding Etoile du Sahel to a goalless stalemate in Sousse. The Tunisians led by Africa Cup of Nations winner Roger Lemerre suffered a 1-0 loss in Egypt and were favourites for the second leg showdown. But they failed!

It’s Christian Gross’ chance to play in an African club final in his first stint at an African club. The renowned Swiss gaffer endured a hard start to life at the White Knights and several reports claimed that club chief Mortada Mansour could have sacked his 25th coach since running the club in 2014.

The stage is now set for both North African sides to battle for the crown. The first leg is slated for May 19 in Berkane with the return clash scheduled on May 26 in Cairo.
