U-20 Afcon: Senegal overpower Ghana, qualify for World Cup

Senegal produced a convincing performance to overpower Ghana’s Black Satellites with a 2-0 victory, making them the first country from Africa to qualify for the Under-20 Fifa World Cup Wednesday afternoon.

It was a 100% win from two games for the Young Teranga Lions at the ongoing 2019 Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Niger.

Both goals came from Youssouph Mamadou Badji in the first half of the game at Stade de Maradi.

Badji hit the opener on 11 minutes when he out-jumped his markers to head home following an inspiring run at the Ghana defence by teammate Drame from midfield.

The striker doubled then hit his brace on the stroke of half-time when he fired past Satellites goalkeeper Manaf Nurudeen.

The 2-0 result also puts Senegal, who are firmly top of Group B with 6 points, through to the semifinals of the U-20 Afcon.

After two games in Group B, Ghana now sit second on the log with three points, same as Mali who are a goal short after beating Burkina Faso 1-0 early on.

Coach Jimmy Cobblah and his boys now have the arduous task of avoiding defeat in what promises to be a feisty final group game against Mali to stand a chance of advancing to the semis and taking up the second slot to the Poland World Cup available to the group.
