Catherine Musonda: Zambia goalie out of Women’s Afcon

Zambia have been forced to find a replacement goalkeeper following an injury to second choice Catherine Musonda ahead of the start of the 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana.

Musonda came off worse after colliding with a Cameroonian striker in the 7-0 pre-tournament friendly defeat to Les Lionnes Indomptables during their Abidjan training camp on Monday.

She has been ruled out for three months with an ankle problem.

“Our Second goalkeeper Catherine Musonda was injured in the international friendly with Cameroon. She and the striker from the other team hit into each other and was stepped on around the ankle. So she sustained a Lateral Malleolar Fracture on the left foot…

“She [Musonda] would be out for a good three months so that the fracture heals well,” Zambia’s team doctor Faith Chibeza Mwansa revealed in an interview with the Copper Queens’ Media Officer.

Meanwhile, midfielder Helen Chanda is expected to recover from a knock in time for the tournament opener on Sunday after being given a rest.

The Zambia women’s national team arrived in Ghana for their third Afcon Wednesday evening. They will lodge at the Coconut Groove Hotel in Elmina.

The Copper Queens will play their Group B matches at Cape Coast Stadium against Equatorial Guinea (Nov. 18) and Nigeria (Nov. 21) before moving to Accra to face South Africa in the final group game on November 24.
