Ghana rout hosts Uruguay in U-17 WWC opener

Ghana spanked tournament hosts Uruguay 5-0 to go top of Group A on the opening day of the 2018 Fifa U-17 Women’s World Cup Tuesday night.

The Black Maidens scored twice under the opening half-hour before completing the emphatic victory with three more in the second half.

In front of a descent crowd at the Estadio Charrúa, Montevideo, Ghana made minced meat of Uruguay’s Selección Sub17, matching their best ever score at the U-17 Women’s World Cup against the same opposition they beat at the Azerbaijan edition in 2012.

Attacker Fuseina Mumuni opened the floodgates with a beautiful turn and finish inside the penalty area after receiving a pass from skipper Mukarama Abdulai on 20 minutes.

Five minutes later, Abdulai took her turn to score, connecting home a cross from the left by Grace Anima with a header from close range.

But Fuseina Mumuni would be forced out of the game injured six minutes from the half-time break. A heavy collusion involving her and Uruguay goalkeeper Jennifer Sosa led to both players being substituted as a result of injury.

The goals continued after the break with first half substitute Millot Pokuaa scoring with a calm finish after breaking away in the 67th minute.

Winger Suzzy Dede Teye who had come on moments before Ghana’s third goal, set up number four and the second of the game for her captain Abdulai.

Capping an impressive outing in time added on, Mukarama Abdulai made it 5 for Ghana and a personal hat-trick with a toe-poke finish past goalkeeper Agustina Caraballo.

Mukarama Abdulai was also named player of the match.

Ghana go top of Group A on goal difference from New Zealand who snatched a 1-0 victory over Finland in the other opening group fixture. The Black Maidens will next face the Finns on Friday.
