Michael Essien was at the Ghana team camp Sunday afternoon to motivate the girls hours before kicking off their U-20 World Cup campaign against hosts France.
The former Ghana international is one Fifa’s special guests at the competition.
While the Black Princesses took their lunch at the team hotel in Vannes, Essien popped up much to the delight of the entire team who welcomed him with wild cheers.
Stating his mission, the former Chelsea star said: “this is only a small surprise. I wish you all good luck.”
“This [World Cup] is a good opportunity for you all. Go out there and show them you know what you’re about..,” he added.
Michael Essien later joined the Princesses to sing and dance before the team headed for the Stade de la Rabine.
Ghana play France at 17:30 GMT.
