Essien completes Welsh course for Uefa B Licence

Despite recently declaring not setting his sights on coaching after hanging up his boots, former Ghana and Chelsea star Michael Essien has gone through the modules to obtain Uefa B Licence from the Football Association of Wales.

Back in April, the 35-year-old said he was concerned about what to do after football. “I don’t have plans of going into coaching but I may do something relating to football.”

Essien’s intentions tilt towards scouting and unearthing talents it later emerged.

And the midfield gem is tackling the technical aspect of what is to come his way by joining others for an intensive 8-day Uefa B Residential Course at the Football Association of Wales Coaching Education Center by in June.

Essien and several other ex-footballers like Lewis Price, Carlos Edwards, Simon Davies, Stern John and Pieter Cremers were taken through classroom and practical sessions.

Giving his thoughts on the transition into coaching, Essien said: “When I was a player I just listened and did what they [coaches] wanted. Coming here for the first time has been great. Now I’m looking forward to it.”
