Bayern’s Okyere Wriedt called up to Black Stars squad

German champions Bayern Munich have revealed that reserve team striker Kwasi Okyere Wriedt has been invited for Ghana’s upcoming international friendlies.

The Black Stars are scheduled to play Japan and Iceland on May 30 and June 7 respectively.

And the 23-year-old, born to Ghanaian parents in Hamburg, Germany, has been handed a maiden call-up after recently pledging his international future to the country of his parents.

A publication on Bayern’s official website Tuesday read:

“Great award for Okyere Wriedt! The top scorer of the amateurs of Bayern has been selected for the upcoming international matches of the national team of Ghana.

“The team of coach Kwasi Appiah will test themselves against two World Cup participants.

“Ghana meet Japan on May 30 in Yokohama.

“They then play the Iceland national team in Reykjavik on 7 June.”

The Black Stars are expected to open camp on May 20.

Kwasi Okyere Wriedt started out at SC Hamm before stints at FC St. Pauli’s reserves and LSK Hansa. He was then signed by Bayern Munich last summer from VfL Osnabrück – a German third tier team after racking up 12 goals and nine assists in 39 games in 2016/17.

It’s been a steady progression for Wriedt so far this season, goals in friendly games preceding a first senior squad call-up for the Matchday 8 fixture against Freiburg and Bundesliga debut against Borussia Mönchengladbach five weeks later.

All the while, he has been performing admirably for Bayern’s reserves in the fourth tier, managing 21 goals in 28 appearances.

Wriedt is the first Ghana international to feature for the Bavarians after compatriot Sammy Kuffour’s departure in 2005.
