Medeama demand full points from abandoned Sharks clash

Medeama SC have written to the GFA demanding to be declared winners of their Ghana Premier League matchday 8 tie with Elmina Sharks.

The match ended abruptly after centre referee Yakubu Nuhu Liman suffered a head injury on his way to his dressing room during halftime break at the Nduom Stadium on Wednesday.

The Wa-based referee’s report to the GFA alleges an attack – stoning – by some fans believed to belong to the home side – Elmina Sharks.

While the Premier League Board has forwarded the case to the Disciplinary Committee after condemning circumstances surrounding the incident, the visiting team – Medeama SC have lodged an official protest against Sharks after making their statement of case to the Ghana Football Association.

Medeama’s letter reads: “It is our submission that Elmina Sharks failed woefully to control their supporters, again failed to provide adequate security before, during and after the game which resulted to the abrupt end of the match.

“It is imperative to note what is succinctly provided by the GFA General Regulations, at Article 35 (4) quoted…that “the Association shall hold clubs responsible for the misconduct of their supporters before, during and after a match.”

“These acts of Elmina Sharks FC sins against both Articles 34 (1b) and 31 of the GFA General Regulations and Disciplinary Code respectively and must suffer for the consequences.

“Reading Articles 34(1b) and 35 of the General Regulations together, it is humbly submitted that the supporters of Elmina Sharks initiated acts responsible for the abrupt end of the match and the club must forfeit the said match.

“We request that Medeama SC be awarded three (3) points and three (3) goals of the said match in line with Article 34(1b) of the General Regulations and the Article 31 of the Disciplinary Code of the Ghana Football Association in order to prevent future occurrences,” the Yellow and Mauves’ submission added.

Meanwhile, Elmina Sharks have denied that referee Nuhu Liman was assaulted. According to the club, he tripped and fell on a policeman’s baton while he was making his way to his dressing room.
