WATCH: George Afriyie declares GFA presidential bid

Incumbent Vice-President George Afriyie, on his 50th birthday, made official his intention to vie for presidential seat during the Ghana Football Association’s elections in 2019.

The seat is being vacated by Kwesi Nyantakyi who has been Ghana FA boss since 2005.

George Afriyie has grown through the ranks of Ghana football with stints at clubs like Swedru All Blacks, Great Olympics, Liberty Professionals and Okyeman Planners. He has also served in various management committees at the FA and is currently the chairman for the Black Stars.

Speaking during his birthday celebration Friday night, Afriyie who was handpicked by Nyantakyi as his vice in 2015 said:

“I am extremely grateful to Mr. Nyantakyi for the opportunity given me to serve as his vice president. For the past three terms, he has been a big brother, a leader to Ghana football fraternity and I’m honoured to work with him.

“In the last few months, I’ve had the thoughts and the question regarding whether I will be contesting the FA Presidency in 2019 following the public disclosure by my boss Mr. Nyantakyi that he will not be contesting in the next elections

“Mr. Chairman, I will like to use this memorable occasion to announce my intention to take part in the 2019 FA Presidential elections,” he declared.

According to Afriyie, he will be rolling out his vision for Ghana football soon.

“Following an extensive consultation with all the relevant stakeholders in the game, in the coming days, I will be putting out my vision for Ghana football…

“Friends, football people, I believe we can build on the achievements chalked by this administration led by Mr. Nyantakyi to continue to improve football in Ghana,” he stated.

George Afriye becomes the second after Nana Yaw Amponsah to officially declare intentions to succeed Kwesi Nyantakyi as the next GFA president.
