Iceland confirm June 7 friendly against Ghana

Coach Kwasi Appiah will lead his Black Stars to face Iceland in a pre-World Cup friendly on Thursday June 7.

The Football Association of Iceland confirmed the fixture with Ghana today – to be played at Laugardalsvellir – two days before the men fly out to Russia for the 2018 Fifa World Cup tournament – their maiden outing.

A statement on the official website of the Football Association of Iceland indicated that the game against the Black Stars will be the last for coach Heimir Hallgrímsson and his team’s preparations for the World Cup.

Earlier this week, the Ghana FA top hierarchy confirmed negotiations were almost through for international friendlies with two unnamed World Cup-bound teams.

“…We have sealed agreements with two countries whose identities I cannot divulge at the moment for June. I can confidently say we [Black Stars] are playing to matches in the month of June because negotiations are far advanced with some deals almost signed.

“So in the month of June, we will take advantage of the preparations of some of teams going to World Cup in bid to gain some points to improve our position in the Fifa Rankings,” vice president of the Ghana Football Association and Management Chairman of the Black Stars, George Afriyie said in an interview.

Before taking on Ghana in June, Iceland are poised to face Mexico and Peru in international friendlies on March 23 and 27 respectively.

Iceland are in the same group with Ghana’s rivals Nigeria at the Russia World Cup. They face off on June 22 at Volgograd Arena, Volgograd.
