Jo Ayew scores but Swans draw at Newcastle

Ghana striker Jordan Ayew scored the match opener but Swansea City were forced to settle for a point as they drew 1-1 with Newcastle United at St James’ Park Saturday.

Ayew and countryman Christian Atsu (for Newcastle) lasted the entire duration of the game but it was the former who continued his new scoring form with number 4 in the Premier League this season.

Newcastle were having plenty of joy on their left flank and came closing to taking the lead in the 22nd minute, but Welshman Paul Dummett blazed over from close range after Christian Atsu fizzed a low cross into the box after ghosting beyond Mike van der Hoorn.

But the deadlock was eventually broken in the 60th minute as van der Hoorn curled an effort into the area, and Ayew headed beyond Darlow at the second attempt to send the travelling supporters into raptures.

The Swans’ lead lasted just eight minutes though as substitute Joselu fired home from a tight angle to ensure the points were shared.

The result means Swansea remain at the foot of the Premier League table with just 19 points to their name.

Meanwhile the Magpies, who had made a bright start to the season, are left in 14th position on 23 points from as many games, only three more than 18th-placed Stoke City who have a game in hand as they visit Manchester United on Monday.
