Asante Kotoko: The Real Madrid player Steven Polack jokingly tried to sign

Kumasi Asante Kotoko kicked off their pre-season preparations last Thursday ahead of the new season with head coach Steven Polack and his staff getting ready to face the new challenge.

The club defied odds to beat Accra Hearts of Oak to lift the MTN FA Cup to complete what was not an inspiring last season and Polack knows he needs massive improvements if he is to achieve bigger things next year and that means the signing of better players especially in the attacking department of the team.

With twenty-three goals scored in thirty league games, the Porcupine Warriors had the second worst attack after relegated Bolga All Stars who scored twenty-one times and to get the team firing the goals Polack has revealed how he tried to sign Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

“You know what? When I went on holidays I contacted Cristiano Ronaldo to come and score some goals for us but he isn’t available,” Polack joked.

The British trainer was discussing transfer issues and added that it is not possible for the club to sign European players for affordability reasons. With Sadick Adams and Obed Owusu assured of their squad places, striker Yakubu Mohammed is rather understood to be on the periphery of the club despite starting pre-season with Berekum Chelsea’s Stephen Sarfo a likely target to replace the former Ashantigold attacker.

Meanwhile the future of Abass Mohammed also hangs in the air as the player is currently rehabilitating after suffering a serious injury that ruled him out action before last season ended and the same fate is true for Kwame Boateng making a loan return from Great Olympics but has not been spotted at the Adako Jachie since the team started the pre-season training.

What is certain is that, Kotoko cannot get Cristiano Ronaldo. That transfer will never happen but what we know is that the fans are expecting a reliable prolific striker in Kumasi when the season starts be it Stephen Sarfo, the rumoured Aristide Bance or a possible Eric Bekoe return.
