South Africa not interested in hosting Chan 2018 – Jordaan

South Africa will not present itself as an emergency host for the 2018 Chan after the Confederation of African Football (Caf) withdrew the rights from Kenya were last weekend.

Caf said it was not ready to take further risks with Kenya who had failed to show their preparedness after the last inspection exercise on the infrastructure for the competition showed work was behind schedule.

The African football governing body has since opened bidding for a new host for the 16-team tournament slated for January 12 to February 4, 2018.

Interested countries are expected to submit their intentions with a proof of full backing from their respective governments by Sunday October 1.

The likes of Morocco, Ethiopia and South Africa have been speculated to be favorites to become the new hosts for the Chan 2018 finals but Danny Jordaan who is president of the South African Football Association (Safa) and as well a Caf Executive Committee member has shot down reports of harbouring an interest.

Jordaan explains to TimesLIVE that South Africa’s major reason for not showing interest is their inability to raise a competitive squad to compete during the period.

“The problem for us is the release of players‚” said Jordaan‚ referring to the unwillingness of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs to release players for national duty outside of dates on the co-ordinated FIFA international calendar. “

“It would be a fight to get a decent team and would offer few positive outcomes‚” he told TimesLIVE.

South Africa hosted the 2014 Chan tournament.
