Asante Kotoko coach Steve Polack has charged his strikers to step up to expected standards at the topflight.
The club’s statistics, in terms of goals, leaves much to be desired for the Porcupine faithful. As they currently place within the top 4, a good look at the league table shows probably, some better goal per game ratio could have seen them place higher than they are now.
In 25 Premier League games, Kotoko have managed to score 20 goals and conceded 17 while the top three teams have hit over 30 goals each so far.
In response to growing criticisms directed at him regarding the Porcupines’ poor conversion rate, the English trainer jabbed back saying it is not his job to track back to teaching players on how to master the art of goalscoring at such high level.
“The coach is not the one in front of the goal; the coach is not doing that. As a player, you have to take responsibility.
“So the next question is, what is the coach’s job at training? We [Kotoko] are not an academy, we are a premier team. You don’t learn things like that.
“In England, premier players have to keep the ball and have to shoot past the goalkeeper, you just put them in position and they have to do that. So it’s not actually our job to do that,” Polack said at a post-match.
Kotoko, on Sunday, could only beat relegation-bound Bolga All Stars 2-1 despite creating close to a dozen openings in their Ghana Premier League matchday 25 encounter at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
Pressure mounted on the side after Imoro Ibrahim halved the two first-half goals which were scored by strikers Abass and Yakubu Mohammed. The latter was the worst culprit in the spurning spree by Kotoko, crowning it all with a big boot from the penalty spot and attracting for himself boos from the home fans as he got substituted afterwards.
