EPL: Atsu shines but Newcastle lose season opener

Christian Atsu impressed but his Newcastle United suffered a 2-0 home loss to Tottenham Hotspur in their 2017/18 Premier League season opener on Sunday.

The Magpies who made a quick return to the topflight as winners of last season’s Championship finished the game with 10 men. Their captain Jonjo Shelvey was giving the marching orders early in the second half for standing on Dele Alli.

And the Nigerian-born English attacker went on to punish Rafael Benitez’s men with a close-range effort in the 66th minute.

After setting up the opener, Christian Eriksen grabbed his second assist when he teed up Ben Davies who hit the ball into the bottom right corner. 2-0 for the Spurs.

Atsu, the Ghana international who lasted the game, created Newcastle’s only real threat late on in the game, forcing Hugo Lloris to make a low save.

Newcastle will next be on the road to Huddersfield Town who caused a shock with a 3-0 win on their Premier League debut win on the road against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
