Black Stars Team Manager, Ameenu Shardow has defended his players following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), insisting the team’s performances were better than the results suggest.
Ghana’s disappointing AFCON qualifying campaign saw them finish bottom of Group F with just three points from three draws and three defeats, including two home losses.
However, Shardow believes the team showed strong performances despite the poor results.
“The results are what they are, but if you look at the performances in most of the games, we played better than the results would indicate,” Shardow said in an interview on Happy FM.
He pointed to the opening match against Angola, where Ghana lost 3-1, as an example of the team’s better-than-expected performance.
“If we’re being honest and factual about the game, did anything suggest that we deserved to lose? When you set emotions aside and analyze the match, you’ll see that we performed well.
Shardow further argued that, based on the team’s overall play, Ghana should have topped their group.
“If the performance in all our games is anything to go by, Ghana should have finished first in the group. Unless you choose to ignore the facts
Despite the strong performances, the Black Stars ended their qualifying campaign with an embarrassing 2-1 defeat to Niger on Monday at the Accra Sports Stadium, sealing their failure to qualify for the 2025 tournament.
