Former Black Stars player, Kim Grant, has called for the sacking of Black Stars head coach Otto Addo following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
In a Facebook post, Grant, criticized Addo’s tactical decisions, describing them as indicative of a “glaring lack of experience” and an inability to implement a playing system that maximizes the team’s strengths.
The Black Stars finished bottom of Group F, with just three points, behind Angola and Sudan, who both secured qualification spots ahead of Ghana.
Grant, who has been managing at the lower levels of European football, also alleged that Addo’s tenure is being protected by influential figures within the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
He remarked that past coaches were dismissed for less, and questioned why Addo’s staff is being shielded despite the team’s disappointing campaign.
“The narrative to retain them for the World Cup qualifiers is outrageous and risks further embarrassment.
“It’s time to stop protecting mediocrity, banish egos, and demand accountability.”
Ghana’s failure to qualify for the tournament marked the first time in 20 years that the four-time African champions missed out on AFCON.
Although no official statement has been made, media reports suggest that Otto Addo’s position will not be under immediate threat.
Kim Grant’s post:
The Ghana Football Association (Black Stars’) failure to qualify for AFCON 2025 is a devastating reflection of systemic incompetence, lack of accountability, and an ongoing disregard for the basics of football management.
Despite access to a global pool of talented players, poor scouting, political interference, and substandard recruitment continue to cripple our national team.
Tactical decisions highlight a glaring lack of experience, with an inability to implement a coherent playing system that suits the players’ strengths. Instead, we see square pegs forced into round holes, wasting talent and failing to maximize potential on the pitch.
Adding to this mess is the arrogance of some players who believe their status in Europe’s top leagues makes them above African football. They fail to understand that the dynamics of playing for the national team are entirely different.
The quality of teammates at their clubs does not translate to the national stage, and their inability—or unwillingness—to adapt only deepens the crisis. This egotistical mindset is a betrayal of the jersey and the nation.
Meanwhile, no other serious footballing nation would tolerate the level of failure we’ve seen. Coaches in the past were dismissed for far less, yet this current technical staff is being shielded by an inner circle, even after this disastrous AFCON qualification campaign.
The narrative to retain them for the World Cup qualifiers is outrageous and risks further embarrassment. It’s time to stop protecting mediocrity, banish egos, and demand accountability.
Ghana football needs leadership with integrity, tactical expertise, and a commitment to excellence. The excuses must end, and the work to restore the Black Stars’ pride must begin now.
