Former Black Stars assistant coach Ibrahim Tanko has come to the defence of under-fire head coach Otto Addo, urging fans to show patience as calls for his dismissal intensify following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Addo, who is in his second stint as Black Stars coach, has faced significant scrutiny after Ghana finished bottom of their qualifying group, marking the first time in 20 years the nation will miss the prestigious tournament.
Despite this setback, Addo’s two victories in the ongoing 2026 World Cup qualifiers have kept Ghana’s hopes alive for a spot in the tournament, leaving his future as head coach uncertain.
“I don’t believe the job is too big for him. He came in at a challenging time and led Ghana to the World Cup in Qatar,” Tanko told Flashscore.
“Although the results weren’t as expected, he deserves another chance, especially with the World Cup qualifiers coming up.”
Tanko also pointed out the risks associated with sacking Addo, including potential financial costs and the uncertainty of finding a suitable replacement who could improve the team’s fortunes.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is expected to make a decision on Addo’s future during an Executive Council meeting on Wednesday.
Ghana’s next World Cup qualifiers, against Chad and Madagascar, are scheduled for March 2025.
