Black Stars Management Committee member, Akwasi Agyeman, has described Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as a wake-up call for the national team’s technical staff.
Agyeman, who is also the CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, urged coach Otto Addo and his team to engage in deep self-reflection after overseeing Ghana’s worst AFCON qualifying campaign in history.
Ghana’s bid for AFCON qualification ended in disappointment after they finished bottom of Group F with just three points from three draws and three defeats.
The Black Stars were 11 points behind group leaders Angola and five points behind second-placed Sudan, while Niger, who defeated Ghana in their final match on Monday at the Accra Sports Stadium, finished with four points more than the Black Stars.
The match against Niger was marred by a fan boycott, with only a small number of supporters in attendance, many of whom expressed their frustration by celebrating Niger’s goals.
Agyeman stressed that the focus must now shift to the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, with Ghana facing crucial home and away matches against Chad in the coming months.
“This is not the time for change, but it is a clear signal for Otto and his technical team to take a hard look at what’s not working,” Agyeman said in an interview with Hitz FM. “We need to find stability and focus ahead of the World Cup qualifiers.”
Ghana’s failure to reach the 2025 AFCON marks a disappointing chapter in the nation’s football history, further intensifying pressure on the technical team as the Black Stars look to rebound in World Cup qualifying.
