Ghana coach Otto Addo has underscored discipline and commitment as non-negotiable standards for the Black Stars, as they prepare for their upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Angola and Niger.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Addo announced his decision to omit Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey from the squad despite his strong performances at club level.
Addo disclosed that he had spoken with Partey about the decision, choosing not to reveal full details but emphasizing that the exclusion was a deliberate choice rooted in his expectations as head coach.
Partey’s omission follows his withdrawal from Ghana’s recent AFCON qualifiers against Sudan, citing fitness concerns.
Addo appeared to question this explanation, noting that Partey had not made himself available to the Ghana Football Association for further assessment.
“You have to be disciplined, you have to be a role model, and you have to show performance. Commitment is essential,” Addo said.
He stressed that if issues arise with any of these expectations, he engages with the player, but reserves the right to exclude them if improvements are not observed.
Addo further remarked, “For me, it’s always an honour to come here. It’s not just about myself; it’s about Ghana. I expect this from all players, and this is what makes us strong.”
Ghana is set to face Angola on November 15 and will play a home match against Niger in Accra on November 18 as they look to secure their place in the upcoming AFCON tournament.
