Basake Holy Stars came from behind to secure a thrilling 2-1 victory over Accra Lions in their first-ever league meeting of the Ghana Premier League.
Accra Lions began the match-week ten fixture strongly, taking the lead in the 34th minute when Salman Faris Tahiru converted a superb cross from Baba Salifu Apiiga with a powerful header.
The visitors dominated the first half, creating multiple chances but failing to extend their lead.
The second half, however, saw a dramatic shift as Holy Stars top marksman Prince Tweneboah found an equalizer in the 60th minute after a costly error from Lions’ goalkeeper Osei Bonsu.
Lions quickly attempted to regain control, but David Akintunde’s attempt at a quick response sailed wide as he tried to lob Holy Stars’ goalie.
With both sides pushing for a late goal, it was the hosts who capitalized on final-minute pressure as Tweneboah, once again converted a chance, sealing their victory at the Crosby Awuah Memorial Park.
The win is Basake Holy Stars’ third of the season and they lie 10th ahead of match-week 11 against Legon Cities in Accra.
For Lions, they slump into relegation battle; 16th position after their fourth loss of the league campaign.
The Accra-based outfit will host Heart of Lions in their next encounter.
