Heart of Lions pulled off a surprising 1-0 victory over Asante Kotoko at Len Clay Stadium on Saturday, handing the Porcupine Warriors their second consecutive defeat of the season.
The decisive goal came from former Hearts of Oak striker Kwadwo Obeng Jr., who capitalized on a mistake from Kotoko goalkeeper Mohamed Camara in the 28th minute.
Camara’s attempted clearance fell into the path of Obeng Jr., who calmly slotted the ball into an empty net, securing the Lions’ first away win of the season. Lions’ victory marks Kotoko’s second defeat in five days after losing 2-1 to Legon Cities on Wednesday.
Despite having a bigger share of ball possession, Kotoko struggled to penetrate a well-organized defence led by their former manager, Bashir Hayford.
The defeat drops Kotoko from second to third place in the league standings, prompting the team to regroup ahead of their next fixture against Bechem United.
Meanwhile, Heart of Lions climbs to seventh place and will look to maintain their momentum when they host Berekum Chelsea in their upcoming match.
Lineups
Kotoko coach Prosper Narteh Ogum replaced Frederick Asare for Mohammed Camara and in midfield, he opted for the two defensive midfielders in Michael Kyei Dwamena and Andrews Ntim for the clash.
Two-time Ghana Premier League winner Bashiru Hayford chose Reuben Hennessey and Ebenezer Abban in central defence.
