Wafu B U-20: Ghana coach Desmond Ofei celebrates Afcon qualification despite final loss to Nigeria

Despite a narrow 2-1 defeat to Nigeria in the WAFU B Championship final in Togo, Ghana U-20 head coach Desmond Ofei is celebrating his team’s qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Black Satellites’ primary objective in the tournament was to secure an AFCON berth, making a return to the continental stage after missing out in 2023, and they accomplished this by reaching the final.

The journey wasn’t without challenges; Ghana’s squad was missing nine key players from their successful African Games campaign, where they claimed the gold medal.

Despite these setbacks, the team met their Afcon qualification goal, a feat Ofei sees as a testament to their resilience and hard work.

“Qualifying for the U-20 Afcon is a huge achievement for us, especially considering the circumstances,” Ofei said.

“This team faced many challenges, but their determination and commitment have been incredible. I’m proud of each and every one of them.”

With their Afcon spot secured, Ghana now awaits the announcement of the 2025 tournament host country, aiming to make a strong impact on the continental stage once again.
