Qualification should not be a problem for Ghana – Charles Akonnor

Former Ghana coach Charles Akonnor expects the Black Stars to qualify for the 2025 Afri6ca Cup of Nations (AFCON), despite the abysmal start in the qualification series.

The Black Stars opened their campaign with a disappointing 1-0 loss to Angola at Baba Yara Stadium, followed by a 1-1 draw against Niger, leaving them third in Group F with just one point.

Akonnor, who captained the senior national team at the Afcon 2000 and began the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers as head coach, is confident the team will qualify for the Afcon 2025.

“Qualifying should not be a problem. I will be surprised if they don’t qualify, but we have to do well when we play in the competition proper,” Akonnor stated to Graphic Sports.

Ghana faces Sudan in a crucial doubleheader, starting with the first leg at the Accra Sports Stadium on October 10 and a return leg on October 14 at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Libya.

Meanwhile the Stars have been hit with injuries ahead of the game in Accra. Notable names include Arsenal’s Thomas Partey and Majeed Ashimeru of Anderlecht.
