I apologise for backing Otto Addo’s appointment as Black Stars coach – Agyemang Badu

Former Ghana international Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has issued a public apology for supporting Otto Addo’s return as head coach of the Black Stars, following the team’s disappointing performance in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Ghana’s recent 2-0 defeat to Sudan on October 15 has left the team winless after four matches, raising concerns about their chances of qualifying for the tournament.

During an appearance on Agoro Fie on Onua TV, Agyemang-Badu expressed regret over his earlier backing of Addo, acknowledging that the coach might not be the right fit for the role.

Agyemang-Badu, a key member of Ghana’s triumphant 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup squad, also criticized the overall decline of the national team, suggesting that the challenges have been underestimated for some time.

“I apologise. Those who advocated for the second coming of coach Otto Addo, I gave him massive support, but I’m sorry. It seems the task is beyond him.

“Sometimes when you talk about these things, you are tagged as a bad person. If the Black Stars cannot secure victories against teams like Niger, they do not deserve to compete at the Afcon.”

Badu urged football stakeholders to reconsider their approach, even suggesting a break from major tournaments to rebuild the team’s foundation.

Since Otto Addo’s return, he has managed just two wins from eight games. Ghana regroups in November for the remaining Afcon qualifiers against Angola and Niger.
