Black Stars’ struggles began after 2018 World Cup failure – Ghana coach Otto Addo

Black Stars coach, Otto Addo, has reflected on the challenges facing the national team, attributing their struggles to their failure to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

In an interview with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) following the doubleheader against Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, Addo acknowledged the difficulty the team has faced in recent years.

He also admitted that their qualification for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar was partly due to luck.

“Since failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, we’ve been struggling as a country for a long time. We were fortunate to qualify for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.”

Despite accepting that Ghana’s chances of qualifying for the next Afcon are slim, the coach remains optimistic.

“As Ghana, we should qualify for Afcon. Mathematically, there’s still a chance, and we will do everything in our power to keep that chance alive,” Addo concluded.

Now the focus shifts to the last two qualifiers against Niger and Angola while building a side for the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.
