Afcon 2025Q: Kudus apologizes, vows redemption after Black Stars’ poor run

Ghana’s Mohammed Kudus has issued an apology on behalf of the Black Stars following their disappointing results in the October set of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers against Sudan.

Coach Otto Addo’s side managed a 0-0 draw in Accra before suffering a 2-0 defeat in the reverse fixture, leaving Ghana with only two points from four games in Group I and on the verge of missing out on qualification for the tournament in Morocco.

Angola, who top the group with 12 points, and Sudan (7 points) are well-placed to secure the two available spots for Afcon 2025, while Ghana, a four-time continental champion, faces an uphill task to avoid elimination.

“As someone who captained the team in the two games, it is with great humility and a deep sense of responsibility that I issue this statement,” Kudus said in a statement released on Wednesday.

“On behalf of the entire team, I would like to extend our sincerest apologies to the people of Ghana for our recent performances against Sudan in Accra and Libya.”

Kudus, who led the team during the doubleheader, acknowledged the disappointment felt across the nation.

“Despite our utmost effort and dedication, the results did not reflect our aspirations or the pride we have in representing our beloved nation. We understand the disappointment and frustration this has caused, and we share those feelings,” he added.

The West Ham United midfielder reassured supporters that the Black Stars are determined to regroup and improve ahead of their remaining qualifiers.

“We want to assure Ghanaians that we are committed to learning from our mistakes, regrouping, and working tirelessly to restore the Black Stars to our former glory.”

Kudus urged fans to stand by the team despite the difficult circumstances.

“Your encouragement and faith in us will fuel our determination to succeed. We will not give up,” he said.

The Black Stars have two more matches to save their Afcon 2025 campaign, but with Angola and Sudan in commanding positions, Ghana’s hopes of qualifying hang in the balance.
