GPL referees receive GHC1000 for officiating a game – Referees Chairman

Chairman of the Referees Association, George Seijah has revealed that referees officiating in the Ghana Premier League(GPL) earn GHS 1,000 per game.

This disclosure comes amid growing concerns regarding the performance and integrity of referees in the domestic leagues. Allegations of match-fixing have engulfed the league over the last three campaigns, resulting in the dismissal of Ashantigold from Ghana football last season

During a hearing related to a petition from the Save Ghana Football Forum, Seijah made known the amount referees receive per game.

“The salary is a take-home of 1,000 cedis for Premier League referees. The Division One League and Women’s League referees receive 750 cedis. The GHS 1,000 payment covers transportation, officiating, food, and accommodation.”

Concerns over officiating standards have been a long-standing issue in Ghanaian football, particularly following the 2018 Anas “Number 12” exposé, which uncovered widespread corruption in refereeing practices.

The revelations have intensified calls for reforms to improve the integrity of the game.
