Ghana coach Otto Addo reflects on Angola defeat in AFCON qualifiers

Ghana coach Otto Addo has acknowledged that his team could have performed better in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against Angola, despite the challenging conditions at the Baba Yara Stadium.

The Black Stars faced the Palancas Negras on Thursday, aiming for a strong start in their bid to qualify for the 2025 AFCON tournament.

However, a late strike from Felicio Joao Milson in injury time ended Ghana’s 24-year unbeaten run at the iconic Kumasi venue.

Speaking after the match, Addo refrained from placing full blame on the state of the pitch, despite its poor quality.

“I don’t want to put the loss entirely on the pitch, even though it wasn’t in good shape. Against the Central African Republic, we also played on a bad pitch but managed to win. We have to improve.”

Despite the setback, Addo remained optimistic, highlighting the positives from the second half of the game. He expressed confidence that Ghana could still secure qualification for the tournament.

“The second half gives me a lot of confidence that we can qualify. The good news is that our destiny remains in our hands since we still have to play all the teams in the group.”

Ghana will now turn their attention to their next fixture against Niger, set to take place on Monday in Morocco, as they look to bounce back from the defeat.
