Black Satellites coach Desmond Ofei on team rebuilding ahead of Wafu B tourney

Ghana U-20 head coach, Desmond Ofei, has expressed concern over the departure of several key players from his squad that won the African Games earlier this year, as he prepares for the 2024 Wafu B U-20 tourney.

Ofei revealed that many of the Black Satellites’ standout players have moved to Europe to pursue their professional careers since their victory in March.

Notable absentees include Abdul Hakim Sulemana, who joined Danish club Randers, and Aziz Issah, who has signed for Barcelona.

The exodus of players, according to Ofei, has made it challenging to assemble a new squad for the tournament, which begins on October 17.

“We’ve lost a lot of players. Since the African Games, we’ve seen over 9 to 10 players leave for Europe to start their careers.

“Rebuilding the team has been difficult, but we have some good quality in the squad. I’m confident they can show their potential during the tournament.”

Despite the setbacks, the gaffer remains optimistic about the team’s growth and preparation.

“We’re not where we want to be yet, but the team is gradually improving. I’m sure we’ll be in better shape before the tournament starts.”

Ghana has been drawn into Group A alongside Benin, Niger, and hosts Togo. The Wafu B U-20 Championship will also serve as qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Black Satellites are aiming to return to the U20 AFCON after missing out on the 2023 edition.
