Ghana’s hopes of securing their first win in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers were dashed after a 1-1 draw against Niger on Monday, September 9.
The match, held in Berkane, Morocco, saw the Black Stars take the lead just before half-time. Defender Alidu Seidu opened the scoring in the 44th minute with a swerving shot that found the back of the net.
Ghana entered the break 1-0 up and looked poised to extend their lead early in the second half. Mohammed Kudus came close to doubling the advantage after a slick pass from Inaki Williams, but the Niger goalkeeper denied the West Ham midfielder.
Inaki Williams later had a chance to make it 2-0 when he was played through by Mohammed Salisu, but his weaker-footed attempt was saved once again by the Niger shot-stopper.
As the match drew to a close, Niger fought back and were rewarded in the 80th minute. Oumar Sako capitalised on a scramble in the Black Stars’ penalty area, slotting home the equaliser to secure a point for the Mena.
The draw leaves Ghana with just one point from their opening two games of the AFCON qualifiers, as they continue their quest to book a place in the 2025 tournament.
