Otto Addo reveals Baba Rahman’s reluctance to return to national team

Ghana’s head coach, Otto Addo, has revealed that defender Baba Abdul Rahman is still hesitant to return to the Black Stars, raising concerns ahead of key international fixtures.

At a press conference where Addo announced the squad for the upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Angola and Niger, the coach addressed the issue head-on.

“Baba Rahman has personal and family obligations,” Addo explained.

“I had previously urged the media to ease off on the criticism directed at him, but despite that, he remains reluctant to rejoin the team due to what happened in the past. Nevertheless, the door is always open for his return.”

Rahman’s reluctance is not new. The left-back had previously opted out of international duty before the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to focus on his club career.

The former Chelsea defender was also absent from Ghana’s squad during the recent 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic, fueling speculation about his commitment to the national team.

Ghana will take on Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium on September 5, followed by a critical match against Niger in Morocco on September 9 in the 2025 AFCON qualification series.
