David Oduro set to become first Ghanaian to transition directly to FC Barcelona

Spanish giants FC Barcelona are set to make a late splash on transfer deadline day, securing the signature of Ghanaian left-back David Oduro from Accra Lions, as per Fabrizio Romano.

The June 12, 2006-born prodigy will be joining Barcelona’s renowned La Masia Academy, where he is expected to further hone his already impressive skills.

Oduro, who had a trial with Chelsea in January 2024, was quickly recognized as a “magnificent sensation” during his trial period at Barcelona. His performances left a lasting impression on the club’s coaching staff, leading to the decision to bring him into the fold at La Masia.

This move is historic, as Oduro becomes the first player to make a direct transfer from Ghana to FC Barcelona.

Oduro’s rise to prominence in the Ghana Premier League, where he played two seasons for Accra Lions including 15 matches in the 2023/24 season, has drawn significant attention. His solid defensive skills and ability to contribute offensively – evidenced by his goal in a 1-1 draw against Bibiani GoldStars – have made him a standout performer.

Accra Lions co-owner, Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthäus, who has likened Oduro to Bayern fullback Alphonso Davies, has been a key figure in facilitating this transfer.

Now, Oduro will have the opportunity to develop further at one of the world’s most prestigious football academies, with hopes of securing a permanent transfer to the Barcelona senior team in the future.

The deal is expected to be finalized before the transfer window closes today, capping off a remarkable chapter in the young defender’s career.
