Afcon 2025Q: Jonas Adjetey replaces injured Djiku in Ghana squad

FC Basel’s Jonas Adjei Adjetey has been called up to replace Alexander Djiku, who has been ruled out of Ghana’s upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers against Angola and Niger due to injury.

Djiku, the 30-year-old defender for Fenerbahce, suffered a thigh injury during a Turkish Super Lig match against Alanyaspor on Friday night, which has sidelined him from the crucial qualifiers.

Scans revealed a Grade One strain in his right quadriceps, requiring 10 to 14 days of recovery.

Adjei, 20, has been a standout performer for Basel this season, featuring as a regular in the Swiss Super League. He has completed all five of their league matches and logged 58 minutes in the Swiss Cup.

The young defender’s journey started at Teshie Football Academy, with subsequent spells at Accra Great Olympics and Berekum Chelsea before moving to Basel.

Adjetey is set to join the Black Stars squad on Monday as they prepare for their Group F opener against Angola at Baba Yara Sports Stadium on September 5. The team will then travel to Berkane, Morocco, for their second match against Niger on September 9.
