2024 U-20 WWC: Ghana’s Princesses primed for 7th World Cup campaign

The Black Princesses, Ghana’s U-20 women’s football team, have departed for Colombia to compete in the 2024 Fifa U-20 Women’s World Cup.

Drawn into Group E, they will face Austria, Japan, and New Zealand, with their opening match against Austria on September 2.

Since June 27, the Princesses have been undergoing intensive training in Accra and Cape Coast, focusing on tactical strategies, physical conditioning, and team cohesion.

Ghana Football Association President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku and Youth and Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif have expressed their support, urging the team to make a significant impact in this year’s tournament. The Princesses aim to advance beyond the group stage for the first time in their history.

Despite qualifying for every tournament since its inception in 2002, Ghana has yet to progress past the group stage. This marks their seventh consecutive appearance, and they are determined to make it a memorable one.

Head Coach Yussif Basigi expressed confidence in the team’s potential: “I have absolute confidence in these girls. They’ve worked tirelessly to get to this point, and I believe we have the talent and determination to make a real impact in Colombia. We’re not just going to participate; we’re going to compete.”

Team captain Afi Amenyeku echoed this sentiment: “We’re ready for this challenge. We’ve been preparing for months, and we’re united in our goal to make Ghana proud. We’ll take it one game at a time, but we’re all dreaming of reaching the knockout stages.”

The Fifa U-20 Women’s World Cup runs from August 31 to September 22, 2024. The Black Princesses are aiming to break new ground in Colombia.
